Aurecon - a different approach, that’s making a positive impact
Delivering on its promises, Auckland-based international engineering, design and advisory company Aurecon offers a truly flexible, diverse and inclusive culture. It actively encourages its people to think differently, resulting in the delivery of innovative solutions to its clients.
Aurecon’s leading team approaches every project with out-of-the-box thinking, developing unique solutions to achieve outcomes not thought possible before.
Aurecon’s work is positively impacting the lives of Aucklanders. From large-scale hospital projects backed by the New Zealand Government, to some of the largest pieces of infrastructure ever to be procured in New Zealand, Auckland’s City Rail Link and the SH20 Waterview Connection, Aurecon undertakes work that matters.
Recognition, engagement and a positive work environment
The company’s Senior Recruitment and Sourcing Consultant, Andy O’Dell comments: “Because of the sort of work we do and the way we approach it, there’s a really positive environment here. Our people are engaged in meaningful work that they can easily see the outcomes of.”
In October 2020 Aurecon was named Australasia’s most innovative company and in April 2021, Aurecon was recognised as one of Australia and New Zealand’s Best Places to Work 2021 by the Australian Financial Review. In 2019, Aurecon was the first New Zealand engineering company to achieve The Rainbow Tick certification for diversity and inclusion and it maintained its accreditation in 2020.
A new world of work
Aurecon has industry-leading policies around flexible working and parental care - lived and demonstrated by its leaders. “With our digital platforms available, combined with flexible work policies, Aurecon has moved to a hybrid working model since COVID-19. Our approach is about flexibility, purpose and working where it best suits you, your employer and your client” says Andy.
We’re giving our people guides and tools, to have the right conversations to design their work weeks for their work community.
As long as the business has time to plan for it, we try really hard to make it happen. It’s about what makes people happy, what makes them tick.

Making people happy is also evidenced through Aurecon’s focus on mental wellness. Each of its offices has two ‘Mental Health First-Aiders’, who look after the wellbeing of other members of the team. From keeping an eye on stress levels in times of added pressure, to helping people navigate a tricky work situation, these first aiders are a friendly internal resource for people to go to when they need help.
The current environment
Aurecon’s flexible approach to working came to the fore in 2020. While it’s practically business as usual now, working from home is still openly encouraged with the team’s safety and wellbeing the company’s number one priority. With an eye to the future, Andy sees Aurecon in a strong position. “We’re looking ahead to see how we can help New Zealand recover from the impacts of COVID-19. It’s important we make sure we’re well-positioned to help at the other end.”
You can believe the brochure
How often is the reality of something not quite what we expected? Andy insists both Auckland and Aurecon deliver what they say they’re going to, “We work hard to ensure that we deliver on our promises, we make people feel valued from day one, and this experience is maintained as they progress with us.”
Andy adds that Auckland itself is no different. “You can believe the brochures! The culture here is relaxed and welcoming, the work is interesting and diverse, and there’s real opportunity to drive your career ahead quickly.”
