Introducing Study Auckland student ambassador Maila Walmod from Denmark.

Studying in Auckland there is a great social life
Maila is studying Sports Science at the University of Auckland.

Kia ora Maila, what do you love about Auckland city?

I love that I can hike up a volcanic summit right in the middle of the city! Auckland is the perfect mix of inner-city activity and stunning nature. All the different corners of the city have their own personality. It’s incredible to be bare foot on a black sand beach less than an hour’s drive from the city centre. And did I mention good coffee and great yoga? Another two things I love here!

What kind of new relationships did you make as a student in Auckland?

I made some amazing new friendships that I cherish a lot, which will get me visiting Auckland often in the future. For my accommodation I chose to flat which gave me a very authentic glimpse of my flatmate’s life here in Auckland and through different hobbies, I met people from some amazing communities.

What has been your favourite experience in Auckland?

Uh, can I only pick one? My first hike up Mt Eden, getting that beautiful view over the city was a spectacular experience. And hiking up Rangitoto was something special too! When I first arrived here, I happened upon Yoga Academy, an inner city yoga studio, which offers great solace and respite for me when I’m busy at University. Plus I’ve made lots of good friends there!

Fun fact about yourself?

I have been on the Danish National Sports Team for Trampoline. I guess this explains the interest in sport and physiology!
