The new Rukuhia Global Leadership Programme lets international students interact with Māori culture in a meaningful way and dive deep into the traditions, beliefs, language and values of Māori people.

Spend the day on a Māori marae (meeting house) participating in workshops that focus on leadership, values, innovation, sustainability and the connection of people, place and environment. You will:

  • experience a pōwhiri (Māori welcoming ceremony involving speeches, dancing, singing)
  • meet iwi (tribe) leaders, Elders and Youth Council members
  • take part in a Te Reo Māori workshop (learn basic Māori greetings and how to say New Zealand place names correctly)
  • participate in a waiata and haka workshop (Māori song and dance)
  • learn about natural food products grown at the marae and eat traditional Māori food
  • take a guided walk to learn about specific landmarks, trees and birds
  • participate in a workshop on Māori innovation and the global economy and learn about the work Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei does in the community and with Auckland and New Zealand business groups.
